Bisate Lodge is a small luxury lodge run by Wilderness, close to Volcanoes National Park. Its six villas are built into the slope of an eroded volcanic cone, with wide windows looking out over the Virunga volcanoes. The design draws on the royal palace architecture of traditional Rwanda.

The lodge is known for its long-running reforestation project, which replants indigenous trees on the surrounding hillside, and for its work with nearby communities. It suits travellers who want privacy, outstanding service and a strong conservation story close to the gorilla trailheads.

Location

The park headquarters are at Kinigi, about 15 km from Musanze and roughly 110 km — around two and a half hours by road — from Kigali International Airport. The road is paved all the way. Trekkers must be at Kinigi for the 7:00 am briefing, so most people stay near the park the night before. From Rubavu on Lake Kivu, the drive is about an hour and a half.
