Permits & cost

How much is a gorilla permit in Rwanda?

US$1,500 per person for international visitors, set by the Rwanda Development Board. In 2026, Rwandan and East African Community citizens pay US$200 and African citizens and residents US$500, except from June to October. Full permit guide.

How far in advance should I book?

Three to six months ahead for June to September and the December holidays; often a few weeks ahead in the wetter months. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.

Are permits refundable?

Treat them as non-refundable. Any rescheduling follows the Rwanda Development Board's rules at the time, which we explain before you pay. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

What else should I budget for?

Transport, lodges, porters, tips, visas and any extra activities. We quote each trip in full once we know your dates and lodge level.

The trek

How long does a gorilla trek take?

From about one hour to five or more hours of walking each way, plus one hour with the gorillas. Total time is usually two to seven hours.

How close do you get to the gorillas?

The rule is to keep about seven metres away. Gorillas sometimes move closer on their own; your guide will tell you how to react.

How many people are in a group?

A maximum of eight visitors per gorilla family per day, with a ranger-guide, trackers and an armed escort.

Can I choose a short trek?

You cannot choose a family, but your driver-guide can request an easier trek at the briefing, and rangers take fitness into account.

What happens if it rains?

Treks go ahead in the rain. Wear waterproof boots and a rain jacket; showers in the Virungas often pass quickly.

Health, age & fitness

What is the minimum age?

15 years for gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

Do I need to be very fit?

You should be able to walk on steep, muddy ground at altitude for two to three hours with rests. Porters help a lot. Fitness guide.

Can I trek if I have a cold?

No. Gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses, and rangers can refuse sick visitors. Tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Is there an option for limited mobility?

Yes. Travellers who cannot walk the trail can be carried in a sedan chair by a team of porters. It must be arranged in advance.

Travel practicalities

Do I need a visa for Rwanda?

Many nationalities can travel visa-free or get a visa on arrival or online. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Check the current rules for your passport before travel.

Which vaccinations do I need?

A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever, and is needed for onward travel to Uganda. Ask a travel clinic about other vaccines and malaria prevention.

What should I pack?

Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and sleeves, gardening gloves, a rain jacket, a warm layer, a daypack and water. Leave plastic bags at home — they are banned in Rwanda.

Is Rwanda safe to visit?

Rwanda is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in Africa for travellers. Normal precautions apply.
