Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking: Which Is Right for You?
Mountain gorillas live in only two areas: the Virunga Mountains, shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Most travellers choose between Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi or Mgahinga. Both deliver the same extraordinary hour with a gorilla family. The differences lie in cost, time and terrain.

Why choose Rwanda
- Time. You can land in Kigali and be near the park the same afternoon, which makes a two- or three-day gorilla trip realistic.
- Easy logistics. Good paved roads, a compact country and short transfers between parks.
- Lodges. A strong range of high-end lodges close to the park headquarters.
- More to combine. Golden monkeys, the Dian Fossey hike, Lake Kivu, Nyungwe’s chimpanzees and Akagera’s Big Five, all within a week.
Why travellers choose Uganda
- Permit price. Uganda’s permit is roughly half the price of Rwanda’s.
- More families. Bwindi has many habituated families across four trekking sectors.
- Habituation experience. Uganda offers a longer gorilla habituation experience with families still being habituated.
- Longer safaris. It suits trips of 10 days or more that include savannah parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.
Can you combine both?
Yes. A popular route flies into Kigali and crosses into south-west Uganda for a gorilla trek in Bwindi or Mgahinga, which is only a few hours’ drive from the border. This shortens the journey compared with travelling from Entebbe, and lets you trek in both countries in one trip. You will need visas for both countries; the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.
Our verdict
If your time is limited, or you want to combine gorillas with other primates and a short safari without long drives, Rwanda is hard to beat. If budget is the main concern and you have more days, Uganda is excellent value. Either way, the hour with the gorillas is the same once-in-a-lifetime experience.
